Side Effects May Include Lawsuits
The author discusses the huge increase in the prescribing of antipsychotic drugs and the possible corruption of medical and legal ethics due to the large amount of money involved. Also the settlements of lawsuits against the Foremost drug companies based on the Federal False Claims Act. With record setting settlements and criminal charges are still pending.
He explores the claims new drugs have been represented as safer and are marketed heavily, so some drugs bring in more than $1 billion dollars of sales. This may be tempting to companies to keep selling them and absorb the cost of lawsuits as long as they continue to make money. The Drug companies have paid experts that have to follow the company line or lose lucrative contracts. They also instruct their sales people to market it to regular medical doctors who may not be aware of the lawsuits who then receive bonuses for prescribing their drugs, greatly increasing the drugs market share.
